review // next choice one dose

i know for some people this may come across a little personal or just too much information overall. but i thought it would be beneficial to not just women, but couples who are sexually active and would like to learn more about pregnancy prevention and emergency contraceptives.

recently i took the next choice day after pill. i took it 2 days after having unprotected sex. my period had just went off a week before. according to the site,

Next Choice One Dose™ can reduce your chance of pregnancy if it is taken within 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex (if your regular birth control was used incorrectly or fails, or if you have had sex without birth control).
Next Choice One Dose™ contains levonorgestrel and works the same as the Plan B One-Step® emergency contraceptive pill.
Next Choice One Dose™ is a generic medicine available without a prescription for women 17 years of age or older—you just need to show the pharmacist a valid government-issued ID proving your age. If you are younger than 17 years of age, a prescription is required.
Next Choice One Dose™ should not be used as regular birth control, if you are already pregnant, or if you are allergic to levonorgestrel or any of the ingredients in Next Choice One Dose™. Next Choice One Dose™ does not protect against the AIDS virus (HIV) or other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

in the past i did research on various emergency contraceptives, and they pretty much all have the same side effects. because i only had 72 hours to take the pill i went to the nearest kroger to purchase one. every grocery store and pharmacy sells a different brand, so don't expect to always get the same brand if you visit different stores. some stores carry plan-b which is the non generic pill, which also cost a lot more.

purchase location: kroger | quantity: 1 pill | cost: $38 but they matched the price of another kroger i visited who was out & i got it for $27 instead | prescription: no if you are older than 17. yes if you are 17 or younger.

side effects:

-- headaches:
the pill worked, but i will never select this brand again because my body did not feel well after taking it. i had a headache everyday for almost a week after i took the pill. in the beginning i couldn't figure out why i kept having headaches. i wasn't stressed and i was getting plenty of sleep.

-- felt really tired:
speaking of sleep, i was always tired! you know how before and during your period you nap like a newborn? well that's how i was the week i took the pill and the week following when i had my period all over again. all of a sudden throughout my day i'd just get tired and then a headache would follow.

-- bleeding:
on the box it says you might experience some bleeding. well i sure as hell did. it was a heavy flow which lasted for 5 days (my normal period cycle). i couldn't believe it, but i was more relieved that the pill was working. i thought the bleeding would only last 2-3 days, but as the days went by the flow became heavier.

-- severe breakouts:
my face broke out really bad from nose to chin. i know that some women breakout during their cycle, and i am one of them. but it's never as bad as it was when i took the pill. bumps were all over my chin and in clusters. i kept up with the skincare routine, tried drying the bumps out with alcohol and clay masks, but nothing seem to work. the bumps just continued to appear. my breakouts lasted from the time i took the pill until the week after my 2nd period (3 weeks total).

the pill will not work:

-- if you are already pregnant.
-- if you take it prior to having unprotected sex.
-- if you take it after the 72 hour mark.
-- will not work as an abortion pill.
-- will not cure STDs.

if you are under the age of 17, i suggest you talk with not only your parents, but a nurse or doctor before selecting an emergency contraceptive to take. there may be ingredients within the medicine that may cause severe side effects. it's also really important that you talk with your parents and a doctor (possibly an OBGYN) about sex, ways to prevent pregnancy and any other questions that may arise about sex and your body.

some other options are:

disclaimer: i am not condoning unprotected sex. i suggest that if you have any questions about sex or any information within this post that you speak with a professional.

  3. I have a question! I did not have vaginal intercourse with my partner and he did not ejaculate near me, however, there is a slight chance that precum could've gotten near me. Just to be on the safe side, I bought Next Choice One Dose. Now, I barely had any symptoms, beside a bit of an upset stomach (but maybe that was just my stomach) and the only time I was able to purchase the pill was two days afterwards (my sexual encounter was Saturday around noon, and I took Next Choice on Monday, at nine)
However, my question is, does ovulation have anything to do with the effectiveness of the pill? This is freaking me out. I looked up some sites and I think it says that it's not effective when you're ovulating. I think I was (I have a regular 28 day period cycle, my last period was Jan 14) and according to an ovulation calendar, I was most fertile during the day that I had dry sex with my partner. Is there still a chance of pregnancy? This is really scary, and I need to know. Thanks!

    1. thank you for reading my post.
to be honest with you, you can still get pregnant no matter if you take the pill or not. however, there's a 99% chance it will still work even if you are ovulating. i had just went off my period around the time i took this pill.

if you're really concerned that it may not work for you, please go to your local clinic or hospital.
