the coupon guru

quite often i am asked, "where did you get that?"
"isn't that expensive, how much did you pay for that?"
"oh i know you didn't pay the full price, you are too cheap kay.
"the price tag says $100. let me guess, you got it for $5 though?"

& that is just 4 out of  the zillion questions people ask me about how i go about getting good deals.

something about a good sale, discount or coupon warms my heart. i love watching for big sales, and finding stores with inexpensive items. it's like a drug for me to find expensive items for  super cheap.

-- how it all started:

when i was in high school i worked for kroger as a front end supervisor for almost 2 years. starting out as a bagger, then moving my way up, i was able to learn the beautiful magic behind coupons and sale promotions. before working at kroger, i would throw coupons away, like most people & didn't realize the true value behind them. but once i began seeing customers purchase $200 in groceries, then their total decrease to $50 after coupons, clipping became a new hobby. i came across coupons for a free razor or free 12 pack of soda & that's when it really hit me like damn! customers are getting products for FREE!

after that moment the rest was history. i began printing coupons off line from kroger, publix, target, H&M, best buy....& the list goes on. when customers left coupons because they either forgot or didn't want them, i would take it if it was something i used. it became an obsession to coupon. days where i had to work at the customer service desk, i would sometimes have to count coupons & for me it felt like i was counting dollar bills. i'd come across numerous coupons that read free this or buy one get one free, which are my favorite coupons.

when the newspaper came in the mornings to my grandparents house, i'd pick up our package before heading to work, & when i saw that my neighbors left their's in their yard, i helped myself to their stash too. anytime i seen a coupon it became mine. now i even have my sister giving me her's that come to her house. i believe why throw away money? people always complain that it's a lot of work clipping & printing coupons, when at the end of it all, you're saving money.

recently i introduced my grandad to the show extreme couponing & he is officially hooked. after watching the entire season together one day, he said from that day forward any coupons he came across he'd bring directly to me. ha ha. gotta love my grandad.

below is how i go about my shopping list. i prepare a week in advance.

-- my technique:

  • create a list of what i need/want.
  • make sure you have the money (in your checking account) for what you are going to purchase.
  • check the companies website for current deals & coupons.
  • check the mail for coupons.
  • check debit & credit accounts for any cash back rewards and/or coupons.
  • check email(s) for coupons.
  • compare store prices & ask if they price match.
 -- at the store:

  • only purchase what you have coupons for, so you won't splurge.
  • take time with reading the price tags for expiration dates or mistakes.
  • review your receipt to make sure everything was priced correctly.
  • go in for only what's on your list, then leave. sticking around longer will only make you want to buy more.
