life | graduation

11:45 AM

on december 7, i graduated after 4 long years of working towards my undergraduate degree in psychology. this has been such a long journey, especially since i continued my education right after i graduated high school. when i reflect back over the past 4 years, i see the good & the bad. i see growth, what i need to improve on & the decisions i made that put me in front of some great opportunities.
within my sophomore year of college, i was offered a job as an administrative assistant for the government. i left kroger, where i was a front-end supervisor & entered into a job that doubled in pay & experience. then during my junior year i decided it was time to get a job that coincides with my career path. i polished up my resume & cover letter constantly & applied to jobs nonstop between april 2011 & july 2011. i'll admit, it was tough, & most of the jobs i applied for weren't looking for someone who was a current student working towards their bachelors degree, but for someone who had completed their bachelors or better yet, their masters.

in the field of psychology, most people won't even think to click on your resume if they don't see a masters or doctorate degree. but that didn't discourage me, i continued on applying until i decided to apply to my school. & right away, i had my interview & got the job right on the spot. talk about excited & blessed. until this day, i am still working at my school during the day & i am a beauty consultant during the night (total extremes, i know). eventually during my first semester of grad school (once i hear if i am accepted), which begins in january, i'll be quitting my consultanting job. i will miss it some, but i'll be more thankful that i'll have my old one job schedule back where i can knock out homework faster, attend social events more & most of all sleep!

graduation day:

on the day of graduation i woke up at 7:30am. that was the latest  i could get up to have enough time to do everything i needed to do. left the house at 9:30am to give myself enough time to drive out to the venue which was about 45 minutes away. arrived early & had to pay $10 to park (like seriously, i had to pay $175 to graduate & now i'm paying to park)? between 10:30am & 1pm, i mingled with other graduates, admired the doctorate students (can't wait until the day i'm addressed as dr. morris), took photos, chatted with friends & family over the phone & ate! they served chinese, crab cakes & hot wings. lol.

my grandmother arrived about 30 minutes before we got started. she came around the corner cheesing & saying that i was beautiful & looked good. her eyes began to water & immediately i told her to stop & save those tears for later. we took picture after picture until it was time for her to be seated. my friend josh came & sat by my grandmother. because my school has one graduation a year, it lasted from 1pm until about 5pm. i stayed until 3pm & around that time they were just finishing up with psychology degrees! people who had already received their diploma were either dozing off, texting or walking out the door (which we were asked not to do). my grandmother became hungry, josh had to pick his brother up & kyra got lost on the way. after about 2 & a half hours in, i was ready to go. i left as soon as they were done with the psychology degrees.

as we were leaving, kyra pulled up with my gift & said she was ready to treat me to dinner. we left during rush hour traffic, which gave us more time to become even hungrier, so we decided to pull over at the nearest restaurant - longhorn. it was such a great day & when i got home i was ready to settle down, sip a glass of wine (only for the occasion) with my handsome date :)

december 15, i had a surprise graduation dinner thrown by my awesome date at "do" (pronounced as dough) a pizzeria/lounge. it's a prestige pizza experience where you order food & drinks on an ipad. it was a great night & the drinks there are amazing. you should try the strawberry lemonade with vodka if you're ever in the atlanta area.

anyhow, i just want to thank my grandmother, kyra, josh & trey for taking time out to attend my graduation & treat me to LOTS of yummy food. also for the gifts! i am so blessed & happy to have gone through this experience, & it has taught me a lot about adulthood & taking my studies seriously. i feel accomplished. i feel humbled. & i feel privileged. it is a privilege to be in college. there are plenty of people who would love to have been in my position over the past 4 years, but because of lack of resources or unfortunate situations, they couldn't be. just know that i didn't do this just for me, but for all of the current students, alumni, the students who couldn't finish & the people who wish they had the privilege.

congratulations to ALL 2012 COLLEGE GRADUATES. we made it :)
